Mount Meru — Momella Route

4-Day Mount Meru Trek

Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest peak and one of the most underrated climbs in the country, rising sharply out of Arusha National Park with a dramatic collapsed crater wall and free-standing ash cone. Because it sits inside a national park, the trek comes with an armed ranger throughout, and the lower slopes are genuinely good game country — buffalo, giraffe, and colobus monkeys are common on the first day.

The route climbs steadily through montane forest and heath before a short, sharp summit night to Socialist Peak, with views across to Kilimanjaro on a clear morning making it a popular acclimatization climb in its own right.

Day 1 — Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Montane forest and open grassland

8kmDistance
4 hrsHiking Time
1,500m → 2,514mElevation

After registering at Momella Gate, an armed ranger joins the group for the walk through open grassland and acacia woodland where buffalo, giraffe, and warthog sightings are common. The trail then climbs into montane forest, with a possible detour to the Meru waterfall, before reaching Miriakamba Hut on the crater floor.

Day 2 — Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Heath and moorland zone

5kmDistance
4 hrsHiking Time
2,514m → 3,570mElevation

A short but steep climb along the knife-edge crater rim, with sheer drops into the ash cone on one side and views over the plains on the other. Saddle Hut sits between Meru's main summit and Little Meru, and most groups use the afternoon for an optional side trip up Little Meru (3,820m) to aid acclimatization.

Day 3 — Summit Day: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak, then down to Miriakamba Hut

Alpine and arctic zone — summit day

~15kmDistance
8–9 hrsHiking Time
3,570m → 4,566m → 2,514mElevation

A pre-dawn start climbs past Rhino Point and along the narrow, exposed summit ridge to Socialist Peak, with Kilimanjaro often visible on the horizon at sunrise. After time at the top, the same day continues all the way back down past Saddle Hut to Miriakamba Hut for the night.

Day 4 — Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate

Forest and grassland — descent

8kmDistance
3 hrsHiking Time
2,514m → 1,500mElevation

An easy final morning retraces the outbound trail back through the forest to Momella Gate, with a good chance of more wildlife along the way. Summit certificates are issued at the gate before the transfer back to your hotel in Arusha.
