Kilimanjaro Trekking
Mount Kilimanjaro rises 5,895 meters above the plains of northern Tanzania — the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, and the highest point on the African continent. No technical climbing skill is required, just steady pacing, patience with altitude, and the right guide beside you.
Every route crosses through a different band of the mountain's ecology, from lush rainforest at the base to alpine desert and finally arctic ice near the summit — a single climb that moves through five climate zones in under a week.
Choosing A Route
Each route up Kilimanjaro takes a different line up the mountain, with its own scenery, gradient, and acclimatization profile.
| Route | Approach | Typical Duration | Traffic | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Machame | South, via rainforest and moorland | 6–7 days | Moderate to busy | Scenic variety with a good acclimatization profile |
| Lemosho | West, through remote forest | 7–8 days | Quieter | Longer acclimatization and a more secluded start |
| Rongai | North, near the Kenyan border | 6–7 days | Least crowded | Drier weather and a gentler gradient |
Timing Your Climb
The most reliable windows for clear skies and stable trail conditions, and the busiest months on the mountain. Book well ahead if targeting these dates.
March–May and November bring more rain, especially at lower elevations, but also quieter trails and lush scenery — a fair trade for travelers less bothered by wet gear.
Getting Ready
No prior climbing experience is needed. Regular cardio and hiking with a loaded pack in the months before departure make the biggest difference on the day.
Success on Kilimanjaro comes down to pacing, not fitness alone. Longer routes with built-in acclimatization days consistently see higher summit rates.
Temperatures range from tropical heat at the gate to well below freezing at the summit. Layered clothing and a solid sleeping bag rating matter more than any single piece of gear.
