Kilimanjaro — Lemosho Route

7-Day Lemosho Route Trek

Lemosho approaches Kilimanjaro from the quieter western side, opening with a walk through untouched rainforest far from the crowds of the southern routes. The extra day built into this itinerary compared to Machame gives the body more time to adjust, which shows up in consistently strong summit rates.

The route crosses the wide Shira Plateau, loops beneath the Southern Icefields via the Barranco Wall, and joins the summit push from Barafu Camp before descending through Mweka — the same exit used by most southern routes.

Full Itinerary

Day 1 — Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Rainforest zone

6kmDistance
3–4 hrsHiking Time
2,360m → 2,830mElevation

After registering at Londorossi Gate, a drive along the forest edge drops you at the trailhead for a gentle first walk into the rainforest. Mti Mkubwa — "Big Tree Camp" — sits beneath towering camphorwood and is one of the quietest first nights of any route on the mountain.

Day 2 — Mti Mkubwa to Shira 2 Camp

Moorland zone

8kmDistance
5–6 hrsHiking Time
2,830m → 3,850mElevation

The trail climbs out of the forest and onto the open Shira Plateau, one of the largest volcanic calderas in Africa. Heather gives way to tussock grass and giant lobelia as camp comes into view, with Kibo's summit visible across the plateau for most of the afternoon.

Day 3 — Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Alpine desert zone — acclimatization day

10kmDistance
6–7 hrsHiking Time
3,850m → 3,950mElevation

A textbook "climb high, sleep low" day. The trail rises to Lava Tower at 4,600m — a striking volcanic plug — for a lunch stop, before descending into the lush Barranco Valley. The net elevation gain is small, but the swing up and back down does most of the acclimatization work for the days ahead.

Day 4 — Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Alpine desert zone

5kmDistance
4–5 hrsHiking Time
3,950m → 4,035mElevation

The day opens with a hands-on scramble up the Barranco Wall — steep but short, and over within about an hour. From the top, the trail rolls across a series of ridges and valleys to Karanga, a short day that leaves plenty of time to rest before the push toward Barafu.

Day 5 — Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Alpine desert zone

4kmDistance
3–4 hrsHiking Time
4,035m → 4,550mElevation

A short, steady climb onto the barren Barafu Ridge — base camp for the summit attempt. The afternoon is spent resting, organizing gear, and having an early dinner before a few hours' sleep ahead of the midnight departure.

Day 6 — Summit Day: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, then down to Mweka Camp

Arctic zone — summit day

~17kmDistance
11–15 hrsHiking Time
4,550m → 5,895m → 3,100mElevation

A midnight start under headlamp climbs scree switchbacks to Stella Point on the crater rim, then follows the rim to Uhuru Peak, usually reached around sunrise. The way down to Barafu is quick, and the same day continues further to Mweka Camp in the forest zone below.

Day 7 — Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Rainforest zone — descent

10kmDistance
3–4 hrsHiking Time
3,100m → 1,640mElevation

A final easy descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where summit certificates are presented and the crew is thanked. A transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha follows the same afternoon.
