Kilimanjaro — Rongai Route

6-Day Rongai Route Trek

Rongai is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border, and it stays noticeably quieter than the southern and western options throughout. The trail climbs through dry, low-key forest rather than dense rainforest, which means drier underfoot conditions even during the shoulder rainy seasons.

The route joins the Marangu path near Kibo Hut for the summit push, then continues down the southern side through Horombo Hut to exit at Marangu Gate — so trekkers see two very different faces of the mountain across the trip.

Full Itinerary

Day 1 — Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Forest zone

8kmDistance
3–4 hrsHiking Time
1,996m → 2,600mElevation

The trek begins near the Kenyan border, well away from the crowds of the southern gates. A gentle path through pine forest and open farmland gives way to drier, more open woodland, with a good chance of spotting colobus monkeys before reaching Simba — also known as Rongai 1st Cave — camp.

Day 2 — Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Moorland zone

11kmDistance
5–6 hrsHiking Time
2,600m → 3,600mElevation

The forest thins into open moorland as the jagged outline of Mawenzi Peak comes into full view ahead. The trail crosses rolling heath dotted with giant groundsel before dropping into the sheltered Kikelewa Valley, one of the more scenic and grassy campsites on the mountain.

Day 3 — Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

Alpine desert zone — acclimatization day

5kmDistance
3–4 hrsHiking Time
3,600m → 4,330mElevation

A short but steep morning climb leads directly beneath the dramatic jagged spires of Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro's second peak. Camp sits beside a small tarn in a natural amphitheater of rock, and the extra time here is usually spent on a short acclimatization walk toward Mawenzi's lower slopes.

Day 4 — Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Alpine desert / lunar zone

9kmDistance
4–5 hrsHiking Time
4,330m → 4,700mElevation

The trail crosses the stark, wind-scoured expanse of the Saddle — a high desert plateau linking Mawenzi and Kibo — with little vegetation and thin air underfoot. Kibo Hut sits at the base of the final cone, where the afternoon is spent resting ahead of the midnight summit departure.

Day 5 — Summit Day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then down to Horombo Hut

Arctic zone — summit day

~21kmDistance
12–15 hrsHiking Time
4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720mElevation

A midnight start switchbacks up scree to Gillman's Point on the crater rim, then continues around to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. The descent retraces the same scree slope back to Kibo Hut, and after a short rest the trail continues down across the Saddle to Horombo Hut for the night.

Day 6 — Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Moorland to rainforest zone — descent

20kmDistance
5–6 hrsHiking Time
3,720m → 1,840mElevation

A long final descent drops steadily through moorland and back into lush rainforest, following the well-trodden Marangu path down to the gate. Summit certificates are presented at the park office, followed by a transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
