Kilimanjaro — Machame Route
Known as the "Whiskey Route" for its steeper, more demanding path, Machame is the most popular route up Kilimanjaro — and for good reason. Six days of rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert build in strong acclimatization through the "climb high, sleep low" pattern on the Lava Tower detour.
This itinerary approaches from the south, summits via Stella Point, and descends through Mweka — a classic, scenic line up Africa's highest peak.

Rainforest zone
The trek begins at Machame Gate on the mountain's southern side, climbing steadily through dense montane rainforest. Expect muddy trails, tangled roots, and the calls of colobus monkeys overhead before reaching camp as the forest starts to thin into moorland.
Moorland zone
A shorter but steeper day, climbing out of the forest into open moorland dotted with giant heather and lobelia. Kibo's summit comes into full view for the first time as the trail levels out onto the Shira Plateau.
Alpine desert zone — acclimatization day
The classic "climb high, sleep low" day. The trail rises to Lava Tower at 4,600m for lunch before descending into the Barranco Valley — a key acclimatization boost that noticeably eases the days ahead. The Senecio-studded Barranco Wall looms above camp for tomorrow.
Alpine desert zone
A scramble up the Barranco Wall opens the day — steep but well-graded, and over within an hour. From there the trail undulates across ridges and valleys to Barafu, the "base camp" for tomorrow's pre-dawn summit push. Kit is organized and an early dinner precedes a short rest before midnight.
Arctic zone — summit day
The longest and most demanding day. A midnight start under headlamp leads slowly up scree switchbacks to Stella Point, then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — Africa's highest point — usually reached around sunrise. The descent to Barafu is fast, followed by a further drop to Mweka Camp in the forest zone the same day.
Rainforest zone — descent
A steady final descent back through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where certificates are issued and the crew is thanked. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha follows the same afternoon.
